INTRODUCTION Epidemiological studies play a very important role in understanding the aetiology of diabetes mellitus. India, with a population of 1 billion is second largest country of Asia, which combines a high proportion of rapidly rising diabetes prevalence rates. Dr Hilary King of the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that prevalence of diabetes will rise to 300 million by the year 2025. Of these, more than 150 million will be in Asia. The figures for India are predicted to rise from an estimated 15 million in 1995 to 57 million in 2025. But the data from Asia is still sparse (Cockram 2000).
